5 signs your heel pain needs a podiatrist, not just rest

When morning heel pain is more than a niggle, and the simple steps that actually help.

Heel pain is so common that it's easy to brush off, but some kinds won't fix themselves with rest. Here are five signs it's worth booking in.

1. It's worst with your first steps

Sharp heel pain first thing in the morning, or after sitting, is a classic sign of plantar fasciitis. Resting feels better briefly, but the pain returns because the cause hasn't been addressed.

2. It's lasted more than two weeks

Niggles that settle in a few days are usually fine. Pain that hangs around for weeks needs a proper look.

3. It's changing how you walk

If you're limping or shifting your weight to avoid the pain, you risk creating problems elsewhere, in your knees, hips and the other foot.

4. It flares with activity you love

Pain that stops you running, walking or playing sport is worth sorting early, before you lose fitness or confidence.

5. Rest and new shoes haven't helped

If you've already tried the obvious fixes and nothing's shifted, the driver is usually biomechanical, and that's exactly what a podiatrist assesses.

If a few of these sound familiar, a proper assessment will find the cause and map out a plan. You don't need a referral to book.
